3、ReceivedforpublicationAugust26,1981)SummaryEnzooticdiarrheaofcalveshasformedaseriousproblemandcausedlossesforyearsinthedairyherdkeptatViennaVeterinaryUniversity’sFieldStation.Inpreviousinvestigationsbovinecoronavirushadbeendeterminedasthemostpathogenicentericagent,bovinerotav
4、irusassecondarycausalvirus,whereasenteropathogenicE.coliandCryptosporidiawerepresentbutinsignificantcausally.Twoearliersystematicimmunoprophylactictrialstoreducetheincidenceandseverityofdiarrheasofnewborncalvesfailed.Vaccinatingpregnantdamstwicewithatrivalentcommercialvaccine
5、containingliveattenuatedrotavirusandcoronavirusplusK99+antigenofE.coli(Scourguard3[R])mediatedmostremarkableresults.ThesewererecordedclinicallyandwereassessedbyperformingdailyELISAsoncalffecalsamplesuptoday14afterbirthforbothrotavirusandcoronavirusantigens.Sheddingofenteropat
6、hogenicE.coliandofcryptosporidiawerealsocontrolled.Furthermore,antibodytitresagainstrotavirusandcoronavirusweredeterminedincows’bloodserum,colostrumandwholemilkaswellasincalfsera,includingcontroldatafromunvaccinatedcowsandtheiroffspring.Inaddition,anumberofcalvesoriginatingfr
7、omvaccinatedorunvaccinateddamswereperorallychallengedwithrotavirusandcoronwirus,againdailyscreeningtheirfecalsamplesforvirus-sheddingbyELISA.Veryremarkableprotectiveeffectsofdamvaccinationwerefoundclinicallyaswellasregardingthenumberandshorteneddurationofcalfsheddingofrotavir
