3、ant,JHM-DL,produceslargeplaques,whiletheother,JHM-DS,producessmallplaquesintissueculture.DSreplicatesmoreslowly,hasalowervirusyieldinvitro,andislessvirulentformicethanDL.Theyalsodifferintheirpathogenicityformice:JHM-DLinfectionresultsinacuteencephalomyelitiswhileJHM-DSinfectionresultsindemyelinat
4、ion.OligonucleotidefingerprintanalysisoftheRNAgenomesofthesetwovariantsrevealedthattheyhadalmostidenticalgeneticsequences.Eachvariant,however,hadauniqueoligonucleotidespotnotfoundintheother.Theuniquespotofthelargeplaquevariant,JHM-DL,waslocalizedatapproximately3to5kbfromthe3'end,whiletheJHM-DSuni
5、quespotwasmappedat14to15kbfromthe3'endofthegenome.Wehavefurthershownthattheseoligonucleotidechangesarenotcorrelatedwiththeplaquemorphology.Thesetwovirusesmaybeusefulforstudyingthemolecularbasisofvirus-induceddemyelination.INTRODUCTIONMurinecoronaviruses,ormousehepatitisviruses(MHV),havebeenisolat
6、edfromvariousmousecoloniesforthelast30years.Generally,theisolationhasbeenfromanimalsdyingofacutehepatitis(Dicketal.,1956;Gledhill&Niven,1955;Manakeretal.,1961);however,isolateshavealsobeenobtainedfrommicewithhindlegparalysisduetodemyelinationinthecentralnervoussystem(Cheeveretal.,1949),frommicewi
7、thacuteenteritis(Hierholzeretal.,1979;Ishidaetal.,1978;Sugiyama&Amano,1980),andfromnudemicewithwastingdisease(Hiranoetal.,1975).Ingeneral,thesevirusesestablishlatentgastrointestinalinfectionsandaretransmittedhorizontal
