3、elatedtovirulence.ThreegroupsofhybridomaantibodiesweredifferentiatedbyimmunoprecipitationoflysatesfromJHM-infectedcells.Onegroupprecipitatedthevirionstructuralproteinsgpl70andgp98togetherwiththeintracellularformofE2,gpl50.Asecondgroupreactedwithgp98andgpl50,andathirdgroupprecipitatedgp

4、l50only.Competitionassayswithbiotinylatedhybridomaantibodiesallowedthedefinitionofatleastsixdifferentepitopegroups.Onlythoseantibodieswhichimmunoprecipitatedbothgpl70andgp98neutralizedinfectivity,inhibitedcellfusionandprotectedinfectedratsagainstacutedisease.Anotherclassofantibodiesbin

5、dingtogpl70andgp98alsoneutralizedJHMvirus,butdidnotinhibitfusionanddidnotprotectagainstdisease.Antibodiesthatimmuno-precipitatedgp150andgp98revealedonlyweakneutralizationanddidnotinhibitcellfusionorprotectanimals.Fourepitopesweredefinedbyantibodiesthatimmuno-precipitatedgp150,butreveal

6、ednobiologicalactivity.Thesedataindicatethatthesiteresponsibleforcellfusionisassociatedwithanepitopegroupcarriedbygpl70andgp98.Neutralizingantibodiesbindtothisandanotherepitope.Furthermore,protectionofJHM-infectedratsagainstacutediseaserequiresbothinhibitionofcellfusionandneutralizatio
