3、osalsites.However,recentstudiessuggestthatfunctionalcompartmentalizationandlimitedreciprocitymayexistwithinsomecomponentsofthecommonmucosalimmunesystem.Althoughoralimmuniza-tionisoftenveryeffectiveininducingimmunitytorespiratorypathogens,theconverse(respira-toryimmuni
4、zationtoprevententericdiseases)maynotbeaseffective.Toaddressthisquestionandtostudyinteractionsbetweenthebronchus-associated(BALT)andgut-associated(GALT)lymphoidtissuesrelatedtoprotectiveimmunity,weusedasamodeltwoantigenicallyrelatedporcinecoronaviruseswhichreplicatepr
5、imarilyintheintestine(transmissiblegastroenteritisvirus,TGEV)orrespiratorytract(porcinerespiratorycoronavirus,PRCV).Thetissuedistributionandmagnitudeoftheantibodysecretingcell(ASC)responses(measuredbyELISPOT)andcell-medi-atedimmuneresponses(measuredbylymphoproliferati
6、veassays,LPA)coincidedwiththeviraltissuetropisms.ImmunizationviaGALT(gutinfectionwithTGEV)elicitedhighnumbersofIgAASCandhighLPAresponsesinGALT(gutlaminapropria,LPormesentericlymphnodes,MLN),butlowerresponsesinBALT(bronchiallymphnodes,BLN)andinducedcompleteprotectionag
7、ainstentericTGEVchallenge.IncontrastimmunizationviaBALT(respiratoryinfectionwithPRCV)elicitedsystemictyperesponses(highnumbersofIgGASCintheBLN),butfewASCandlowLPAresponsesinthegutLPorMLNandinducedonlypartialprotectionagainstentericTGEVchallenge.Thusadministrationofvac
