3、cineagainstrotavirusand/orcoronavirusinduceddiarrhoeahasbeenthesubjectofconsiderabledisputeintheliterature.EarlyreportsbyMEBUSandothers(MEBUSetal.,1972,1973)suggestedtheeffectivenessofarotavirusvaccineunderexperimentalconditionsaswellasinthefield.However,thiswasnotconfirmedb
4、ytheresultsofdoubleblindfieldtrials(ACRESandRADOSTITS,1976).THURBERetal.(1977)consideredthatthedoubleblindexperimentaldesign,orrathera50percentvaccination,wasnotasuitablemethodtotestanoralvaccineagainstdiarrhoeacausedbyentericviruses.Bythismethodtheywereunabletoshowprotectio
5、naftervaccinationwithabivalentrotavirus/bovinecoronavirusvaccine,which,however,appearedtobepresentwhensequentialvaccinationwasused.WeemployedbothexperimentalapproacheswhentestingamonovalentrotavirusvaccineincalvesfromendemicallyinfectedDutchdairyherds(DELEEUWetal.,1980b).Pos
6、itiveresultswithrespecttotheincidenceorseverityofundifferentiatedorrotavirus-associateddiarrhoeacouldnotbeshownwitheithermethod.RecentlysimilarfindingswerereportedbyBURKIetal.(1983).SinceinSPF-calvesdeprivedofcolostrumsomeprotectionagainstchallengewasalreadyfoundafterthreeda
7、ys,itwasspeculatedthatneutralizationofthevaccinevirusbyspecificantibodiesincolostrumcouldbeamajorreasonforthefailureofthevaccineunderfieldconditions(DELEEUWetal.,1980b).Inthepresentreporttheresultsoflaboratoryexperimentsaredescribedthatweredesignedtotesttheaboveneutralizatio
