3、edthattheywerenotthedirectancestorsofthoseisolatedinthe1980s.Inthelate1970sandearly1980sintheNetherlandsandtheU.K.pathogenicstrainsofIBVwereisolatedwhichwereunrelatedbyvirusneutralization(VN)teststothoseoftheMassachusettsandotherserotypeswhichhadbeendet
4、ectedpreviouslyintheU.S.A.[7,10,12].Thequestionaroseastowhetherthe1970/80sEuropeanisolateswerecloselyrelatedtostrainspresentinearlieryearsorrepresentedadistinctgroup(s)ofstrains.FortunatelyDawsonandGough[11]hadisolatedIBVstrainsfrommanyregionsofEnglandb
5、etweentheyears1965and1967.SincesomeIBVstrainsappeartobeonlydistantlyrelatedonthebasisofserumVNtestswhileactuallyhavingverysimilar(>~97%aminoacididentity)S1proteins[6]itwasdecidedtocomparethe1960sisolatesbynu-cleotidesequencing.TheVNantibodiesthathavebee
6、nthebasisforcomparisonofIBVisolatesareinducedlargelybytheN-terminalS1subunitoftheSprotein[3,14,16]andS1genesofseveralofthe1970/80sisolateshavebeensequenced[1,6,13,15,17,20]ashavesM(smallmembrane;previouslyreferredtoas3c)andMgenes[-2,19].Thefollowingisol
