3、June,2014AbstractThethesisattemptstostudytheEnglishtranslationofplacenamesinChineseliteraryworksasexemplifiedbyAnthonyC.Yu'sandW.J.F.Jenner'sEnglishversionsofXiYouJiwiththehelpoftheChinese-EnglishParallelCorpusofShaoxingUniversityofArtsandScience.The368placenamesinXiY

4、ouJicanbeclassifiedintofourtypes:administrativeregionnames,naturalgeographicalnames,humanitiesbuildingnamesandotherspecialnames.ThestudyshowsthatthemethodofliteraltranslationisadoptedmorefrequentlyintranslatingtheChineseplacenames;thatis,inthetwoEnglishversionsliteral

5、translationsofplacesnamesaccountforabout47.6%and40%respectively,whileliberaltranslations,about20%and22.3%respectively.81%ofculturalmeaningsoftheplacenamesistransmittedinvariousdegreesinYu'sversion,while75.8%,inJenner's.BothYuandJennertrytotranslatetheplacenamesfaithfu

6、llywithoutlimitingtospecifictranslationmethods;andbaseduponagoodmasteryoftheformationandmeaningsoftheoriginals,theytranslateflexiblyinaccordancewiththepurposeoftranslation.TheauthorthussummariesthegeneralrulesfortranslatingplacenamesinChineseliteraryworks;thatis,theme

7、thodsoftransliterationplusfreetranslationaswellastransliterationareusuallyadoptedinrenderingadministrativeregionnames;indealingwithnaturalgeographicalnames,humanitiesbuildingnamesandotherspecialnames,literaltranslationcouldbethetranslators'priorconsideration;othermeth
