2、e.ThemajorityofhisworksarebasedinhisnativestateofMississippi.FaulknerisconsideredoneofthemostimportantwritersoftheSouthernliteratureoftheUnitedStates,alongwithMarkTwain,FlanneryO’Connor,EudoraWelty,ThomasWolfe,andTennesseeWilliams.Thoughhisworkwaspublishedasearlyas1919,andlargelyduringth
3、e1920sand1930s,Faulknerwasrelativelyunknownuntilreceivingthe1950NobelPrizeinLiterature.TheyoungerFaulknerwasgreatlyinfluencedbythehistoryofhisfamilyandtheregioninwhichhelived.Mississippimarkedhissenseofhumor,hissenseofthetragicpositionofBlackandWhiteAmericans,hischaracterizationofSouther
4、ncharacters,andhistimelessthemes.Theboygrewuplisteningtoallsortsofstoriesabouthisgreat-grandfatherandotherpeopleinhishometown.ThestoriestheNegronannytoldhimandthegossipheheardfromthetownspeoplerestingandchattingonthesmalldowntownsquareprovidedFaulknerwithanoraltraditionofstorytellingasan
5、importantpartofhiseducation.DuringWWIFaulknerservedwiththeRoyalCanadianAirForce.Afterthearmistice(休战)in1918hereturnedtoOxford,asmalltowninMississippi,andforsometimeheledalifeinaratherlistlessway.HeattendedtheUniversityofMississippibutlefttheuniversitywithinayear;hetriedhishandatpoetrybut
6、withoutsuccess;hewentnorthtotheculturalmetropolitancityofNewYork,butwasdrivenbackhomesoonbyloneliness.Hebecameapostmaster,butinlessthanthreeyearsheresignedfromthispost.Allthistime,hehadbeenreading,firstwhateverinterestedhim,andlater,thegreatpoetsandnovelists.InNewYork,FaulknermetSherwood
7、Anderson,afamouswriter,andthenwhenhetraveledtoNewOrleansin1925hegainedentryintothisartisticcenterthroughAnderson.InspiredbyAnderson,Faulknerbegantowritenovels.Faulknerwrote19novelsandnearlyahundredshortstories.Thesettingof15novelsandthemajorityoftheshortfictionistheAmeric
