2、evelopmentofindustryandmodernscience,intelligentmindsbegantoseethatmanwasnolongerafreeethicalbeinginacold,indifferentandessentiallyGodlessuniverse.Inthischanceworldhewasbothhelplessandhopless.EuropeanwriterslikeEmileZolahadalreadydevelopedthisacutesocialconsciousness.Theysawman’slifeasgo
3、vernedbythetwoforcesofheredityandenvironment,forcesabsolutelybeyondman’scontrol.Americannaturalismhadbeenshapedbythewar,bythesocialupheavalsthatunderminedthecomfortingfaithofanearlierage,andbythedisturbingteachingsofDarwinism.America’sliterarynaturalistsdismissedthevalidityofcomfortingmo
4、raltruths.Theyattemptedtoachieveextremeobjectivityandfrankness,presentingcharactersoflowsocialandeconomicclasseswhoweredeterminedbytheirenvironmentandheredity.Inpresentingextremesoflife,thenaturalistssometimesdisplayedanaffinitytothesensationalismofearlyromanticism,butunliketheirromantic
