3、nechildrenborntoWilliamandFrancesSnowintheirNorthStreethome.HisneighbourhoodwasoneofthepoorestinthecityandwasalwaysindangeroffloodingbecauseofitsproximitytotheRiverOuse.Hisfatherworkedinthelocalcoalyards,whichwereconstantlyreplenishedfromtheYorkshirecoalfieldsvia
4、bargesontheOuse.SnowwasbaptisedAnglicanatthechurchofAllSaints,NorthStreet.AllSaints,NorthStreet.SnowstudiedinYorkuntiltheageof14,whenhewasapprenticedtoWilliamHardcastle,asurgeoninNewcastle-upon-TyneandphysiciantoGeorgeStephensonandfamily.WilliamHardcastlewasafrie
5、ndofSnow'suncle,CharlesEmpson,whowasbothawitnesstoHardcastle'smarriageandexecutorofhiswill.CharlesEmpsomalsowenttoschoolwithRobertStephensonanditwasprobablythroughtheseconnectionsthatSnowacquiredhisapprenticeshipsofarfromhishometownofYork.Snowlaterworkedasacollie
6、rysurgeon.Between1833and1836hewasanassistantinpractice,firstinBurnopfield,Durham,andtheninPateleyBridge,NorthYorkshire.InOctober1836heenrolledasastudentattheHunterianschoolofmedicineinGreatWindmillStreet,London.Ayearlater,hebeganworkingattheWestminsterHospitaland
7、wasadmittedamemberoftheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsofEnglandon2May1838.HegraduatedfromtheUniversityofLondoninDecember1844,andwasadmittedtotheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansin1850.AnaesthesiaSnowwasoneofthefirstphysicianstostudyandcalculatedosagesfortheuseofetherandalsochlorof
8、ormassurgicalanaesthesia.HepersonallyadministeredchloroformtoQueenVictoriawhenshegavebirthtothelasttwoofherninechildren,Leopoldin1853andBeatricein1857.[1]Thisl
