3、anisedcounterinsur-gency,thecollapseoftheregionaleconomyandthedemiseofdictatorialformsofpoliticalauthority.The1979SandinistarevolutioninNicaraguaandnearrevolutioninElSalvadorthrusttheisthmusontothecentrestageofwhatFred1Hallidaycalled‘theSecondColdWar’.Nolessdramatic,thel
4、ate1980sintothe1990ssawpeaceanddemilitarisationprocessesunderthemediationofinternationalorganisations,‘transitionstodemocracy’andeconomicrestabilisationunderanewmodeloffreemarketcapitalism.Astheregionfellfrominternationalpurviewinthewakeofpacication,poverty,marginalisati
5、onandapandemicofcrime,drugabuseandinterpersonalviolencespreadasthesocialfabricdeteriorated,symptomaticofstructuralcontradictionsinthesocialorderthathadnotbeenresolved.Wasthisapparentpost-bellicosesocialbreakdownthevestigeoftheregionalconict?Orwereitsexplanationstobefound
