2、ations:MarxandtheOHegelianPhilosophyofNature”(Foster&Burkett,2000)appearedinOrganization&Environmentexactly1yearago.Ourpurposeinthatarticlewasaveryspecificonemadeveryclearfromthebeginning.Wewereconcernedwithaddressingoneofthemostpersistentandseeminglypenetratingcriticismsof

3、Marxforhissupposedinsensitivitytoecologicalissues,namely,theclaimthatinrefer-ringtonatureas“theinorganicbodyofman”inhisEconomicandPhilosophicManuscriptsof1844,aworkotherwiseknownforitsecologicalvalues,hehaddeniedanorganicrelationbetweenhumanbeingsandnature,thussinningirre-d

4、eemablyagainstecologyandnolesssoagainstdialectics(Marx,1974,p.328).Inaddressingthisquestion,wenaturallysingledoutsomeofthosethinkerswhohademphasizedthiscommoncriticismintheirtreatmentsofMarx.ThebestknownandsinglemostimportantworkalongthislinewasnotedsocialecologistJohnClark

5、’s(1989)articleinEnvironmentalEthicsentitled“Marx’sInorganicBody”:awidelycitedworkthatfocusedcentrally(asitstitlesuggested)ontheecologicalsignificanceofMarx’suseoftheterminorganic.Clarkhadarguedthatthe“embar-rassingfact”aboutMarx’streatmentofthehumanrelationshiptonaturewast

6、hatMarxhaddescribednaturenotasthe“organic”butratherasthe“inorganic”bodyofman(p.244).ForClark,thisreferencebyMarxto“the‘inorganic’qualityof‘exter-nal’naturesignifiesitsinstrumentalcharacterinrelationtoanabstractedhumanity,whichistakentobethesourceofallvalue”(p.251).Moreover,

7、notstoppingwithClark,weexaminedthecriticismsofotherleftthinkerswhohadvoicedessentiallythesamecriticism,includingCapra(1982),Eckersley,(1992),Lee(1980),O’Neill(1994),Routley(1981),Salleh(1997),andSoper(1996).Thefirstsectionofourarticle,followingtheintroduction,wasentitled“Th
