2、gecologicalMarxists,haveas-sumedthatMarx’shistoricalmaterialismwasonlymarginallyecologicallysensitiveatbest,oreventhatitwasexplicitlyanti-ecological.However,researchoverthelastdecadehasdemonstratednotonlythatMarxdeemedecologicalmaterialismessentialtothecritiqueofpoliticaleconomyandtoinvestigatio
3、nsintosocialism,butalsothathistreatmentofthecoevolutionofnatureandsocietywasinmanywaysthemostso-phisticatedtobeputforthbyanysocialtheoristpriortothelatetwentiethcentury.Still,criticismscontinuetobeleveledatMarxandEngelsfortheirunderstandingofther-modynamicsandtheextenttowhichtheirworkissaidtocon
4、flictwiththecoretenetsofecologicaleconomics.Inthisrespect,therejectionbyMarxandEngelsofthepio-neeringcontributionsoftheUkrainiansocialistSergeiPodolinsky,oneofthefoundersofenergetics,hasbeenfrequentlyofferedasthechiefecologicalcaseagainstthem.BuildingonanearlieranalysisofMarx’sandEngels’sresponse
5、toPodolinsky,thisarti-cleshowsthattheyreliedonanopen-system,metabolic-energeticmodelthatadheredtoallofthemainstricturesofecologicaleconomics–butonethatalso(unlikeecolog-icaleconomics)rootedtheviolationofsolarandotherenvironmental-sustainabilityconditionsintheclassrelationsofcapitalistsociety.The
6、resultistogenerateadeeperunderstandingofclassicalhistoricalmaterialism’secologicalapproachtoeconomyandsociety–providinganecological-materialistcritiquethatcanhelpuncoverthesystemicrootsoftoday’s“treadmillofproduction”andglobalenvironmentalcrisis.ProminentamongthewedgesdrivenbetweenMarxismandeco-
