2、ng,statisticalinference,andpatternrecognition.Itisastandardrecom-mendedtextinmanygraduatecoursesonthesetopics.Itisalsoverychallenging,particularlyifonefacesitwithoutthesupportofteacherswhoareexpertinthesubjectmatter.Forvariousreasons,bothauthorsofthes

3、enotesfelttheneedtounderstandthebookwell,andthereforetoproducenotesonthetextwhenwefoundthetextdifficultatfirstreading,andanswerstotheexercises.Gainingunderstandingistime-consumingandintellectuallydemanding,soitseemedsensibletorecordoureffortsinLaTeX,andma

4、keitavailableonthewebtootherreaders.Avaluableby-productofwritingupmathematicalmaterial,isthatoftenonefindsgapsanderrorsinwhatonehaswritten.Nowitiswell-knowninallbranchesoflearning,butinparticularinmathematicallearning,thatthewaytolearnistodo,ratherthan

5、toread.Itisalltoocommontoreadthroughsomematerial,convinceoneselfthatoneunderstandsitwell,butthenfindoneselfatseawhentryingtoapplyitinevenaslightlydifferentsituation.Moreover,materialunderstoodonlyatashallowleveliseasilyforgotten.Itisthereforeourstrongre
