2、e,andpatternrecognition.Itisastandardrecom-mendedtextinmanygraduatecoursesonthesetopics.Itisalsoverychallenging,particularlyifonefacesitwithoutthesupportofteacherswhoareexpertinthesubjectmatter.Forvariousreasons,bothauthorsofthesenotesfelttheneedtounderstandthebookwell,andther
3、eforetoproducenotesonthetextwhenwefoundthetextdifficultatfirstreading,andanswerstotheexercises.Gainingunderstandingistime-consumingandintellectuallydemanding,soitseemedsensibletorecordoureffortsinLaTeX,andmakeitavailableonthewebtootherreaders.Avaluableby-productofwritingupmathemat
4、icalmaterial,isthatoftenonefindsgapsanderrorsinwhatonehaswritten.Nowitiswell-knowninallbranchesoflearning,butinparticularinmathematicallearning,thatthewaytolearnistodo,ratherthantoread.Itisalltoocommontoreadthroughsomematerial,convinceoneselfthatoneunderstandsitwell,butthenfindo
