2、sbasictechnologiesforfuturead-vancedinformationprocessingsystems,includingmachinetranslationsystems.(2)Theconceptoflogicprogramming,whichisthebasisoftheFifthGenerationCom-puterProject,isextremelywellsuitedtonaturallanguageprocessing.(3)High-levelmachinetranslations
3、ystemsaretypicalknowledgeinformationprocessingsystems,andwillinfluencetheformoffuturecomputersystems.2.FIFTHGENERATIONCOMPUTERPROJECTTheFifthGenerationComputerProject,whichbeganin1982,isa10-yearprojectoperatingundertheauspicesoftheMinistryofInternationalTradeandInd
4、ustry(MITI).Itisdividedintothreestages,aninitialstageofthreeyears,anintermediatestageoffouryears,andafinalstageofthreeyears.ICOThasjustfinishedfiveyearsofoperation.Briefly,theobjectiveoftheprojectistobuildanewframeworkofcomputertechnol-ogy,withtherealizationofaninf
5、erencemachineasitsnucleus.Itcoversbothhardwareandsoftware,reviewingtheroleofboth,andattemptstomodifytheboundarybetweenthem.Whenonethinksofamachinethatcanperformlogicalinferenceefficientlyathighspeed,oneprobablythinksofaparallelmachine.OneoftheICOTresearchobjectives
6、istherealizationofaparallelinferencemachine.Inferenceisthewayofcombiningknowledgerepresentedintheformofrules.Consequently,therealizationofaknowledgeprocessingmachineisanotherwayofexpressingthisobjective.Amachinethatcanefficientlystore,manageandretrievelargeamountso
7、fknowledgeisthefocusofresearchforaknowledgebasemachine.Theseitemsformthesearchfornewcomputerarchitecture.Inthefifthgeneration,computerswillappearinmanyforms,suchassupercomputersforparallelnumericalcom-putation.ResearchersatICOTseetheinferencemachineasthemachinethat
