3、taneousrestactivity.Despiteasurgeofrecentinterest,thefunctionalroleoftheDMNremainspoorlyunderstood.Interestingly,theDMNactivatesduringretrievalofpasteventsbutdeactivatesduringencodingofnoveleventsintomemory.Onehypothesisisthattheseopposingeffectsreflectadifferencebetweenattention
4、alorientingtowardsinternalevents,suchasretrievedmemories,vs.externalevents,suchasto-be-encodedstimuli.AnotherhypothesisisthathippocampalregionsarecoupledwiththeDMNduringretrievalbutdecoupledfromtheDMNduringencoding.ThepresentfMRIstudyinvestigatedthesetwohypothesesbycombiningarest
5、ing-statecoherenceanalysiswithataskthatmeasuredtheencodingandretrievalofbothinternally-generatedandexternally-presentedevents.ResultsrevealedthatthemainDMNregionswereactivatedduringretrievalbutdeactivatedduringencoding.Countertotheinternalorientinghypothesis,thispatternwasnotmodu
6、latedbywhethermemoryeventswereinternalorexternal.Consistentwiththehippocampalcouplinghypothesis,thehippocampusbehavedlikeotherDMNregionsduringretrievalbutnotduringencoding.Takentogether,ourfindingsclarifytherelationshipbetweentheDMNandtheneuralcorrelatesofmemoryretrievalandencodi
