4、tLeggehadrecordedthisworkwithoutCallas,whosesingingofVerdiwasoneofhergreateststrengths.HehadalreadyusedSchwarzkopf(hiswife)inthe1954recordingatLaScalaunderVictordeSabataandCallaswasfuriousthatshehadonceagainbeenpassedover.SheconfrontedLeggeoverthis,saying
5、:‘IfyourwifecansingmyrepertoirethenIcansinghers.IamgoingtorecordarecitalofMozartariassocanyoupleaserecommendmetoagoodMozartrépétiteur.’Intheend,CallasrecordedonlyfourMozartarias,togoonanLPwithtwomoresubstantialpiecesbyBeethovenandWebercoveringwhatcanloose
6、lybedescribedasGermanrepertoire,althoughnoneofitwassunginGerman.ShehadneverperformedWeberonstage,butshehadgiventheOberonariainEnglishatanauditiontoentertheAthensConservatoryanditbecameastapleatherconcertsinGreece.Beethoven’s‘Ah!perfido’wasoneoftheveryfirs
