2、CornellUniversityTaskconflictisusuallyassociatedwitheffectivedecisions,andrelationshipconflictisassociatedwithpoordecisions.The2conflicttypesaretypicallycorrelatedinongoinggroups,however,whichcreatesaprescriptivedilemma.Threeexplanationsmightaccountforthisrelationship--mis

3、attributionoftaskconflictasrelationshipconflict,harshtaskconflicttacticstriggeringrelationshipconflict,andmisattri-butionofrelationshipconflictastaskconflict.Theauthorsfoundthatintragrouptrustmoderatestherelationshipbetweentaskconflictandrelationshipconflictin70topmanageme

4、ntteams.Thisresultsupportsthe"misattributionoftaskconflict"explanation.Theauthorsalsofoundaweakeffectthatisconsistentwiththeargumentthattacticalchoicesdrivetheassociationbetweenthe2conflicttypes.Weinferthattrustisakeytogainingthebenefitsoftaskconflictwithoutsufferingthecos

5、tsofrelationshipconflict.Recentgroupprocessresearchdistinguishestaskconflictfrom1999;Schweiger,Sandberg,&Ragin,1986;Schweiger,Sandberg,relationshipconflictandarguesthatthetwohavedifferentperfor-&Rechner,1989).Asecondbeneficialeffectoftaskconflictismanceconsequences(e.g.,Am

6、ason&Sapienza,1997;deDreu,affectiveacceptanceofgroupdecisions,Anumberofresearchers1997;Jehn,1995,1997;O'Reilly,Williams,&Barsade,1998;havefoundthattaskconflictcanleadtoincreasedsatisfactionwithPelled,1996;Pelled,Eisenhardt,&Xin,1999;VandeVliert&dethegroupdecisionandadesire
