1、ChinesemetaphorsofthinkingNINGYU*AbstractThisarticlestudiestwoofthefourspecialcases,namelyTHINKINGISMOVINGandTHINKINGISSEEING,thatconstitutethemetaphorsystemTHEMINDISABODYinChinese.Ananalysisoflinguisticdatasuggeststhatthesetwocon-ceptualmetaphorsaregro
2、undedinourcommonbodilyexperiencesofspatialmovementandvision.Itshowsthattheconceptualizationofmindandmentalactivitiesisfundamentallystructuredbymetaphorsconsistingofmappingsfromthedomainofbodyandbodilyexperiences.Itisfoundthat,whiletheChineseexpressionsu
3、nderanalysislargelyconformtotheconceptualmap-pingsoriginallyderivedfromlinguisticevidenceinEnglish(LakoffandJohnson1999),thereexistsadifferencebetweenthesetwolanguagesthatreflectsasignificantdifferencebetweentherelatedcultures.Thatis,West-erncultures’bi
4、narycontrastbetweentheheart,theseatofemotions,andthemind,thelocusofthoughts,doesnotexistintraditionalChineseculture,wheretheheartisconceptualizedashousingbothemotionsandthoughts.Itisacaseinwhichdifferentculturalmodelsinterpretthefunctioningofthemindandt
