2、willingpreviouslytoattributetheneglectofmyworktoitssmallvalue,Icannottaketheinterestwhichisnowmakingitsappearanceasproofofitsquality.TheadvanceofscientificknowledgehasnotleftTheInterpretationofDreamsuntouched.WhenIwrotethisbookin1899therewasasyetno"se

3、xualtheory,"andtheanalysisofthemorecomplicatedformsofthepsychoneuroseswasstillinitsinfancy.Theinterpretationofdreamswasintendedasanexpedienttofacilitatethepsychologicalanalysisoftheneuroses;butsincethenaprofounderunderstandingoftheneuroseshascontribut

4、edtowardsthecomprehensionofthedream.Thedoctrineofdream-interpretationitselfhasevolvedinadirectionwhichwasinsufficientlyemphasizedinthefirsteditionofthisbook.Frommyownexperience,andtheworksofStekelandotherwriters,[1]Ihavesincelearnedtoappreciatemoreacc

5、uratelythesignificanceofsymbolismindreams(orrather,inunconsciousthought).Inthecourseofyears,amassofdatahasaccumulatedwhichdemandsconsideration.Ihaveendeavoredtodealwiththeseinnovationsbyinterpolationsinthetextandfootnotes.Iftheseadditionsdonotalwaysqu

6、iteadjustthemselvestotheframeworkofthetreatise,oriftheearliertextdoesnoteverywherecomeuptothestandardofourpresentknowledge,Imustbegindulgenceforthisdeficiency,sinceitisonlytheresultandindicationoftheincreasinglyrapidadvanceofourscience.Iwillevenventur

7、etopredictthedirectionsinwhichfurthereditionsofthisbook-shouldtherebeademandforthem-maydivergefrompreviouseditions.Dream-interpretationmustseekacloserunionwiththerichmaterialofpoetry,myth,andpopularidiom,anditmustdealmorefaithfullythanhashithertobeenp
