3、Comparableprogressseemsnottohavebeenmadeinthesemantictheoryofnaturallanguages,andperhapsitistimetoaskwhythisshouldbethecase.Whyisthetheoryofmeaningsohard?ThemeaningofcommonnounsTogetsomeideaofthedifficulties,letuslookatsomeoftheproblemsthatcomeupinconnectionwithgeneralnames.Generalnames

4、areofmanykinds.Some,likebachelor,admitofanexplicitdefinitionstraightoff('manwhohasneverbeenmarried');buttheoverwhelmingmajoritydonot.Somearederivedbytransformationsfromverbalforms,e.g.hunter=onewhohunts.Animportantclass,philosophicallyaswellaslinguistically,istheclassofgeneralnamesassoc
