2、geragegroups,whileIndiaisnowherenearachievingthatgoalEducationaldisparitiesfollowsimilarpatternsinbothcountries,buttendtobesharperinIndia.China'sleadinbasiceducationwasestablishedduringthepre-reformperiod,basedonastrongcommitmenttothewidespreadandequitablep
3、rovisionofschoolingfacilitiesatanearlystageofdevelopment.ThiscontrastineducationalachievementsinChinaandIndiaiscrucialinassessingtheirrespectivedevelopmentexperiencesandreformprogrammes.IntroductionfeatureofChina'sdevelopmentexperience,onthepartofrespondent
4、stooverstateorjustasthepersistenceofwidespreadunderstatetheirliteracystatus.Second,COMPARISONSbetweenIndiaandChinailliteracyisoneofIndia'smostseriousinvestigatorsmayhavetheirownreasonstohaveoftenbeenmadeinthedevelopmentsocialfailures.Inthispaper,weattemptov
