2、heco-operativetrendthathadprevailedforthreedecades.Itarguesthatthedeteriorationofrelations,inthecontextofanunresolvedterritorialdisputeandanintensifyingclassicalsecuritydilemma,raisestheprobabilityofarmedconflict,amilitarizeddispute,oracrisis.IttherebyrisksunderminingBeijing
3、’shithertosuccessfulgrandstrategyofreassurance.ItfurthercontendsthatSino-Indianenmity,asidefromcomplicatingbilateralco-operation,alsohinderstheformationandsustenanceofinstitutionsandregimes.IntroductionIndia’sfirstprimeminister,JawaharlalNehru,toldhiscabinetinthe1950sthat“In
4、diaandChinaatpeacewouldmakeavastdifferencetothewholeset-upandbalanceoftheworld.”2Atatimewhenthetwostatesjointlycomprisedlessthanatenthoftheworldeconomy,thiswasaclaimofsomeaudacity.3Today,thatfigurehasrisentoafifth.Moreover,Nehru’sstatementisoverlaidwiththebitterironyofaninte
5、rveningwar,inwhichIndiawashandedaresoundingdefeat.4TheSino-Indianrela-tionshipismorethanjustaquasi-microcosmofitsmoreimportantSino-Americanequivalent,ashasbeensometimesassumed.Norisitonlyrelevanttounderstandingoccurrencesonthelong,largelyHimalayanborderthathasseparatedthetwo
6、sinceChinaannexedTibetin1950andthatnowcomprisesthelongestdisputedborderonearth.Previously,thetiesbetweenIndiaandChinahavebeenanalysedthroughthesetwodominantlenses—usforeignpolicyandterritory—withoutanunder-standingofhowthebilateralrelationshippertainstobroaderconcerns.Thearg
