3、llowJapan’sexampleinresponsetotheinternationaloilcrisesinthe1970s,i.e.upgradeitsindustrialstructure,introduceenergyconservationmeasures,developnewsourcesofenergysupply,andengageinan‘energydiplomacy’todiversifyandguaranteeitsenergysupply.I.IntroductionInrecentye
4、ars,energyhasbeenasignificantconsiderationinChina’seconomic,foreignandnationaldefencepolices.Inmanyways,Chinapursuesan‘oildiplomacy’initsrelationswiththeMiddleEast,CentralAsia,AfricaandLatinAmerica.China’smilitaryleadershavetoplanfortheprotectionofthesearoutesal
5、ongwhichthebulkofChina’soilimportsaretransported.ChinaNationalOffshoreOilCorporation’sfailuretoacquireUnocal(theno.9oilcompanyintheUnitedStates)in2005wasanissueinSino–AmericanrelationsmuchdiscussedamongChineseintellectualsinwhichthethemeofthe‘containmentofChina
6、’oftenemerged.In2003,ChinasurpassedJapanastheworld’ssecondlargestoilconsumer,andsince2000Chinahasbeenthesourceofalmost40%oftheworld’soil-demandgrowth.TheNewChinaNewsAgencyestimatesthatby2020,Chinawillimportmorethan500milliontonsofoilperannum,analmostfour-foldin
