2、Leuven,BelgiumAbstract.Thequestionwhethersubliminalprimescanactivatetheirsemanticmeaningornotisstillofinteresttoday.Threedifferentcompetingtheorieshavetriedtoaccountfortheofteninconsistentresearchresults:Thesemanticcategorizationhypothesis,thedirectmotorspecificationhypothesis,and
3、thecategorysearchmodel.Thepresentstudyaimedtoshedlightonthesedifferentpointsofviewbyexaminingtheroleofcategorysizeinresponsecongruencyeffectswhennovelprimesareused.Threeexperimentswereconductedandatransparentpatternofresultsemerged:Significantprimingeffectswereobtainedacrossdiffer
4、enttasks,irrespectiveofcategorysizeandirrespectiveofstimulussetsize.Thefindingsarediscussedintermsofthethreetheoreticalframeworks.Itbecomesclearthatthepresentresultsprovidestrongevidenceinfavorofthesemanticcategorizationhypothesis,whichassumessemanticprocessingofsubliminalprimes.K

7、iates.evokedthesameresponseandincongruenttrialswhereAlthoughhisresultsweredescribedas“startling”andprimeandtargetevokedoppositeresponses.Theyfound“counterintuitive”(Fowler,Wolford,Slade,&Tassinary,thatthecongruenttrialswererespondedtofasterthanin-1981),successfulreplicationsaccumu
