3、hasworkedonstudiesofmediaagendasettingsincethe1972U.S.presidentialelection(Weaver,1977;Weaver,McCombs,&Spellman,1975),Iammorefamiliarwiththetheoreticaldebatesandempiricalfindingsofthisbranchofmediaresearchthanwiththeoriesandresearchfocusingonframingorpriming.Nevertheless
4、,Iseetheseareasofcommunicationresearchasinterconnectedandasinvolvingsomesimilar,althoughnotidentical,cognitiveprocessesandeffects.AsIhavewrittenbefore(Weaver,1997–1998,p.3),‘‘focusingonframingdoesnotnecessarilymeandiscardingthefindingsofmuchagenda-settingresearchthatism
5、oreconcernedwithwhichissuesareemphasized(orwhatiscovered)thanhowsuchissuesarereportedanddiscussed.’’Whereasthe‘‘firstlevel’’ofagendasettingisfocusedontherelativesalience(usuallyoperationallydefinedasperceivedimportance)ofissuesorsubjects,the‘‘secondlevel’’examinestherel
6、ativesalienceofattributesofissues,asMcCombs(2005)andGhanem(1997)havedescribedindetail.Theseagendasofattributeshavebeencalled‘‘thesecondlevel’’ofagendasettingtodistinguishthemfromthefirstlevelthathastraditionallyfocusedonissues(objects),althoughtheterm‘‘level’’impliesthat
7、attributesaremorespecificthanobjects,whichisnotalwaysthecase.Theperspectivesandframesthatjournalistsemploydrawattentiontocertainattributesoftheobjectsofnewscoverage,aswellastotheobjectsthem-selves,andsomeoftheseperspectivescanbeverygeneral(e.g.,a‘‘ColdWar’’frame).Corresp
