2、ntributionofthisstudytotheunderstandingofagenda-settingandprim-ingeffectsisitsfocusontheroleofevaluativetoneinallstagesoftheagendasetting/primingprocess.First,thepublicsevaluationofissueimportance,whichisthedepen-dentvariableinmostagenda-settingstudies,isinfluenc
3、edbytheissuesaliencyinthenewsandbytheevaluativetoneofmediacoverage(positive,negative,orneutral).Thisevaluativetoneoraffectiveattributeattachedtotheissueispartofthesecond-levelagendasetting.Second,theseaffectiveattributesthatpeopleattachtoissuesfurtherplayanimpor
4、tantroleintheprocessofpriming,onwhichtheyhavebothindirectanddirectimpacts.Priming,therefore,carrieswithitanaffectivecomponent:Itisacombi-nationofmessagestrengthanddirection.Third,thepoliticaljudgmentsofindividualsarealsodirectlyinfluencedbymedia-affectiveattribut
