2、ademicswillhavetocometotermswithatsomepointoftheircareer,usuallythesoonerthebetter.Yet,therehasbeenverylittleresearchontheircharacteristicfeaturesandtheyarenotincludedinmostcoursesofacademicwriting.Weseektoremedysomeofthisprobleminthispaper,whichisbasedonasampleof34proposalsfromEuropean
3、Union(EU)researchgrantapplicationswrittenmainlybyFinnish-ledresearchteams.OurapproachdrawsonSwalesiangenreanalysisaswellasasocialconstructionisttheoryofgenre[Berkenkotter,&Huckin,1995].Inouranalysis,weidenti®edtenrecurrentmovesintheproposals,re¯ectingthegenericaf®nityofgrantproposalstob
4、othacademicresearchpapers(Swales,1981and1990)andpromotionalgenres(Bhatia,1993),inadditiontomovesspeci®ctothegrantproposalsgenre.Theresultsshouldbene®tbothgenreresearchandtheteachingofacademicwriting.PublishedbyElsevierScienceLtdKeywords:grantproposals,geneanalysis,socialconstructionistt
