3、rinityCollegeCambridgewithfirstclasshonorsinmathe-maticsandmoralsciences.Hisworkinlogicandphilosophywaswidelyadmiredandhonored;hewasaFellowandthenalecturerinPhilosophyatTrinity.HewaselectedaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyin1908.HewasawardedtheOrderofMeritin1949andtheNobelPrizeforliteraturei
4、n1950.Russellwasnotanivory-toweracademic;hewasveryinvolvedinsocialpolicyandpolitics,especiallyaftertheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWarandduringthecoldwar.Russellbecameafigurewhowashatedbymillionsofpeoplewhoknewlittleornothingofhisphilosophicalideas—andadmiredbymanyothers.Overthecourseofhi
5、s98yearshevigorouslyopposed,amongotherthings,BritishinvolvementinWorldWarI,theSovietUnionunderLeninandStalin,nucleararms,andAmericaninvolvementintheViet-NamWar.In1916hewasfiredfromTrinityCollege,Cambridge,andin1918hewasputinjail,bothinconnectionwithhisprotestsagainsttheFirstWorldWar
6、.In1940,asaresultofpublicoutrageandataxpayerlawsuit,helostajobatCityCollegeinNewYorkbeforeheteachinghisfirstclass.In1961hewasjailedforhisactivitiesagainstnucleararms.InthestormofprotestsurroundinghisappointmenttoCityCollege,Russellwasuntruthfullyportrayedasacommunist.Butthemostimpor
