2、hepaperoutlinesthenatureofmathematicserrorsandmisconceptions.Codingoflearners’errorswasdonethroughthelensofatypologicalframework.Theanalysisshowedthatmostoftheerrorsandmisconceptionswereduetoknowledgegapsinbasicalgebra.Alsonotedwasthaterrorsandmisconceptionsincalculuswererelatedtolearners

3、’over-dependenceonproceduralknowledgewhichhadnoconceptualbasis.Ontheotherhand,learnerssometimeshadsoundconceptualknowledgeforwhichtheyhadnotacquiredalliedproceduralknowledgeneededtoperforminparticularquestions.Implicationsofthestudytothewidermathematicseducationcommunityarehighlighted.Key

6、ience.InaworkshoporganisedformathematicsteachersbytheSouthAfricanDepartmentofEducation,teacherswererequiredtooutlinethetopicsthattheyfoundproblematictoteach.Theteachersrevealedthatamongotherscalculuswasoneofthem.Onewonderswhytoalargeextenttheteachingandlearningofmathematicsissodifficultan
