2、actsinthefieldofEnglishContractLaw.Thecentralobjectsofstudyareregulativefunctionswithaparticularviewtoestablishingrealizationpatternsoftherhetoricalfunctionsofdirectiveandcommissiveacts.Thefindingsshowthatthelanguageofthelawcharacteris-ticallyselects

3、patternsofregulativesdistinctfrom,forexample,thepatternstypicallyselectedineverydayconversationalEnglish.Thecharacteristicsofthelanguageofthelawcanbeinterpretedwithintheadherencetolegalinstitutions,aswellasintermsofthefaceredressrequiredbythesocio-pr

4、agmaticsituation.LBackgroundThefieldoflegallanguagewithinthewrittenmediumisuniquewithregardtodistinctivelexicalfeatures,suchastechnicalterms,archaicexpressions,etc.,anditisrenownedforitssyntacticcomplexity,whichhasgivenrisetoanumberofstudiesofthesea

5、spects(see,e.g.Danet,1985:278-287).However,withtheexceptionofafewstudies(e.g.Kurzon,1986;WertherandHelmersen,1989),littleattentionhasbeengiventopragmaticsandpolitenessinwrittenlegaldiscourse.Inthefieldofpragmatics(includingworkonpolitenessphenomena),

6、researchhasbeenconcernedprimarilywithoraldiscourse,oftenbasedonnon-sequentialhypo-theticaldata,andveryfewstudiesareconcernedwithpragmaticsandpolitenessinwrittendiscourse(see,e.g.Myers,1989;Pilegaard,1990).Thispaperpresentsapragmaticstudyofahighlyspec

7、ializeddiscourse,viz.thelanguageofauthenticlegislativetextsandcontracts,whichareanalyzedforsocio-pragmaticoccurrenceandpragmalinguisticrealizationofregulativeacts.Politenessisdiscussedwithinaconsiderationoftheimpositionofregulativeacts.Thisresearchha
