5、olearning,withthe42questionnaireitemspresentedinbothEnglishandChinese.Englishlanguageabilitywasassessedbyascalecomprisingthreeself-ratingitemsandtwoself-reportedexaminationresults.Multiplelinearregressionwasusedtorelatethesixsub-scalesoftheSPQwiththeEn
6、glishlanguagescaleandotherstudentbackgroundvariables.Sub-jectswithlowerabilityinEnglishlanguagewerefoundtobemorelikelytoadoptasurfacestrategyintheirlearning.Ontheotherhand,deepmotivationwaspositivelyrelatedtoEnglishlanguageability.Qualitativedatawereal
7、socollectedfrominterviewsinanef-forttoexplainthemechanismsbehindtheseobservations.Itissug-gestedthatstudentswhoareweakerinEnglishconcentrateinitiallyondecipheringtherhetoricalaspectsoftextsoarelesslikelytovisua-lisetheunderlyingmeaningofwhattheyareread
