2、that“nomatterhowwellthestudentslearnsgrammar,nomatterhowsuccessfullythesoundsofL2aremastered,withoutwordstoexpressawiderrangeofmeanings,communicationinanL2justcannothappeninanymeaningfulway”.Althoughvocabularyisunarguablycentraltolanguageacquisitionanduse,vo
3、cabularyinstructionhasnotbeenapriorityinSLAresearch.VocabularyplaysanimportantroleinEnglishstudyformiddleschoolstudents,butthere’snoconclusivewaytotheeffectivelearningandteachingofL2vocabulary.Someexpertspointoutthattherestillremainsanenormousamountofresearc
4、htobedowninthearea.ItisundeniablethatstudentscanacquirelotsofmothertonguevocabularyduringreadinginL1environment.ButEnglishisaforeignlanguageforChinesemiddleschoolstudents;theyhavelittlechancetouseEnglishvocabularyintheirdailylife.Sothemechanicalmemorizationo
5、fthewordsbecomesatypicalwayofsecondlanguageacquisition.Undertheinfluenceofthetheorythatmostvocabularyshouldbeacquiredinthecontext,manyresearcheshavebeenmadeindifferentlevels,amongwhichtheeffectoftask-basedlanguageteachingonEnglishvocabularyacquisitionarouses
6、widelyconcern.1.2FeasibilityoftheResearchTherelativeneglectofstudiesonvocabularyacquisitioninSLAhasoftenbeencommentedonwithinthefieldsoflanguageteaching.Richardswasoneofthefirstscholarstoalertustothefactthatvocabularyistypicallyneglectedinsecond22languageins
7、truction.Fortunately,sincethemid-1980s,moreresearchesarefocusedonvocabularyinsecondlanguagelearning.Howeversomerelatedresearcheshavealsoshowedthelimitationofvocabularyacquisitionthroughnaturalreading.Forinstances,theresultsofastudymadebyHermanetalshowsthatth
