1、AStudyontheUseofEnglishVocabularyLearningStrategiesbyStudentsinaSeniorMiddleSchoolAbstract:Researchesinthefieldofsecondlanguagehaveshifteditsattentionfromteachingtolearningsincethe1970s.Owingtothisshift,manyresearchersbothathomeandabroadbegantofocusonthestudyoflangu
2、agelearningstrategies(LLS).Vocabulary,astheessentialpartofalanguage,haswidelydrawnnumerousscholars’attention.Thepresentstudy,byreferringtotherelevantstudiesonlanguagelearningstrategiesandvocabularylearningstrategies(VLS)inthelastthreedecades,investigatesthestudentsi
3、ntheuseofVLSinaChineseseniormiddleschool.Thestudyintendstoexplore(1)theoverallpatternofEnglishvocabularylearningstrategiesusedbysomeChinesehighschoolstudents;(2)VLSusedbymaleandfemalestudents.Theparticipantsofthestudyare150secondyearseniormiddleschoolstudentsformNO1
4、MiddleSchoolinLinCountyofShanxiProvince.Fromthequestionnaire,wecanknowtheoverallpatternofstudents’VLSanddifferencesbetweenmaleandfemalestudentsinusingVLS.Severalfindingsarerevealedfromthepresentstudy.Firstly,mosthighschoolstudentsholdthatwordshouldbelearntbyusingand
5、studying.Secondly,studentsemployvariousstrategiestolearnEnglishvocabulary,butmostofthemaretraditional,simpleandeasy.Themorefrequentlyusedstrategiesareself-initiation,guessing,dictionaryuseandrehearsalstrategies,andtheleastusedstrategiesareencodingstrategiesandactiva
6、tionstrategies.Thirdly,therearegreatdifferencesbetweenmaleandfemalestudentsintheuseofmeta-cognitivestrategies,guessing,dictionaryuse,notetaking,visualrepetition,word-structureandencodingstrategies.Accordingtotheabovefindings,theauthorpresentssomesuitableimplications
7、forvocabularylearningandteaching.First,teachersshouldhelptheirstudentsrealizetheimportanceofvocabularylearningstrategies.Second,helpstudentsmakeuseofmeta-cognitivestrategiessuchasmakinguptheirplansonvocabularylearning.Then,teachersmustbeawareofthedifferencesinVLSuse
8、bydifferentgenderandprovideavarietyofinstructionaltechniquestocaterfortheneedsofdifferentgroupsofstudents.Finally,studentsshouldmakefullus
