1、ANEWTESTTOMEASUREEMOTIONRECOGNITIONABILITY:MATSUMOTOANDEKMAN’SJAPANESEANDCAUCASIANBRIEFAFFECTRECOGNITIONTEST(JACBART)ABSTRACT:Inthisarticle,wereportthedevelopmentofanewtestdesignedtomeasureindividualdifferencesinemotionrecognitionability(ERA),fivestudiesexaminingthereliabilityandvalidityofthes
2、coresproducedusingthistest,andthefirstevidenceforacorrelationbetweenERAmeasuredbyastandardizedtestandpersonality.UtilizingMatsumotoandEkman’s(1988)JapaneseandCaucasianFacialExpressionsofEmotion(JACFEE)andNeutralFaces(JACNeuF),wecallthismeasuretheJapaneseandCaucasianBriefAffectRecognitionTest(J
3、ACBART).TheJACBARTimprovesonpreviousmeasuresofERAby(1)usingexpressionsthathavesubstantialvalidityandreliabilitydataassociatedwiththem,(2)includingposersoftwovisiblydifferentraces(3)balancedacrosssevenuniversalemotions(4)withequaldistributionofposerraceandsexacrossemotions(5)inaformatthatelimin
4、atesafterimagesassociatedwithfastexposures.ScoresderivedusingtheJACBARTarereliable,andthreestudiesdemonstratedacorrelationbetweenERAandthepersonalityconstructsofOpennessandConscientiousness,whileonestudyreportsacorrelationwithExtraversionandNeuroticism.Researchonjudgmentsofemotionfromfacialexp
5、ressionshasalongandimportanthistoryinpsychology,andhascontributedgreatlytotheliteratureconcerningtheuniversalityofemotion,andtoknowledgeconcerningdifferencesbetweengender,ethnicity,culture,andpsychiatricstatus.Studiesexaminingtherelationshipbetweenindividualdifferencesinjudgmentsofemotion(here
6、onreferredtoasEmotionRecognitionAbility—ERA)andpersonalityalsohaveaconsiderablehistory,butischeckeredwithinconsistentfindings.Ononehand,ERAhasbeencorrelatedwithemotionalexpression(e.g.,Lanzetta&Kleck,1970;Levy,1964;Zuckerman,Hall,DeFrank,&Rosenthal,1976;Zuckerman,Larrance,Hall,DeFrank,&Rosenth
