2、eachersinmiddleschoolsandhighschoolsalwaysattachgreatimportancetostudents’readingandskills.Buttheybarelyhelptodevelopstudents’listeningandspeakingskillsbecauselisteningandspeakingquestionsdon’tappearonthepapersofcollegeentranceexaminations.Thus,whenstudentsgotocollegesanduniversit
3、ies,theirEnglishlisteningandspeakingskillsareveryweak.AlthoughteachersinChina’shigheducationspendgreateffortstodevelopstudents’listeningandspeakingskills,andtherearespecificstandardsonstudents’listeningandspeakingskillsbroughtaboutbythecollegeEnglishcurriculum,thestudents’listenin
4、gandspeakingskillsarestillnotverysatisfactory.AccordingtothedataofthecommissionofcollegeEnglishtest,inthesixoralEnglishtestsfromJanuary1999toMay2001,18550studentsgettheBleveloutof32107students.Thatistosay,only58.7%studentscancommunicatewithpeopleinEnglishbasedonthefamiliartopics,w
5、hichmeansthespeakingskillofcollegestudentsisverypoor.Inaddition,accordingtotheresearchbyLydiaSo(1999:34),onlythespeedofspeakingofEnglishmajorstudentsintheirsecondyearmeetsthestandard.Otheraspectsofspeakingcannotmeettherequiredstandard,suchasthelanguageusedisnotaccurate,thefluencyi
6、snotgood,thecontentofspeechlackscreativityanddeepthinking,unfamiliarwiththerulesusedincommunicationandsoon.Therefore,itishightimewedevelopedandimprovedstudents’listeningandspeakingskillsbecausethosestudentswhoaremoreeffectivecommunicatorsexperiencemoresuccessinschoolandinotherarea
