2、pandeddramaticallyinthenewmediaenvironment.Theyincludenotonlytraditionalimmigrantmediainhostcountries,butalsoavastnumberofhomelandpublicationsthatareavailableonlinetoimmigrantsandsojourners.PastresearchsuggestedthatethnicmediausedeterstheCCAprocess.This
3、paperproposesthatuseofnewonlineethnicmediamayplayadifferentroleinCCA.Guidedbyusesandgratificationstheory,thisstudyinvestigateshowindividualdifferences(i.e.,hostlanguagecompetency,lengthyofstay,acculturationattitudes,andloneliness)andInternetusemotivesin
4、fluencedethnicInternetuseofChinesestudentsintheU.S.Lengthofstay,Assimilationattitude,SocialInvolvementandEntertainmentmotivespredictedChinesestudents’ethnicInternetuse.ThestudyalsoexploredtherelationshipbetweenethnicInternetuseandCCA.Eventhoughnosignifi
5、cantassociationwasfoundbetweenthetwo,theresultindicatedsomeoldconclusionsreachedinthetraditionalCCAresearchmayneedtobereevaluatedintheInternetenvironment.IntroductionWithrecentdevelopmentsincommunicationtechnologiesandglobalizationoftheeconomy,cross-cul
6、turaladaptation(CCA)hasbecomeaprominentsocialphenomenonthathasattractedmuchattentionfromscholarsofvariousdisciplines.TheconceptuallinkagebetweencommunicationandCCAhaslongbeenrecognized.Communicationisbelievedtoservesas“anessentialmechanismthatconnectspe
7、oplefromanothercultureandthehostsociety”(Kim,1997,p.407).SeveralgenerallyacceptedconclusionsregardingthecentralityofcommunicationinCCAhavebeenreachedinthepast.First,eachnewcomer’ssocialcommunicationactivityconsistsoftwobasiccommunicationprocesses:interp
8、ersonalcommunicationandmasscommunication(Kim,1977,1988).Interpersonalcommunicationisbelievedtohaveagreateracculturationfunctionthanthemassmedia(Gudykunst&Kim,2003;Kim,1988).Second,pastresearchhasdemonstratedthathostcommunication(
