2、ngdatafromaface-to-facesurveyofarepresentativesampleoftheIsraeliyouthpopulation(n=927)con-ductedinFebruary1998.Results.Itwasfoundthattheloweranindividual’slevelofattachmenttoclosefriendsandthelessprosocialattitudeshe/sheexpressed,thehigherwasthelikelihoodofhis/herbeingafrequentInt
3、ernetuser.However,Inter-netusersweremorelikelythannonuserstoparticipateinsocialactivitiessuchasparties,singers’performances,andsportsactivities.Conclusions.ContrarytopublicperceptionsitappearsthatamongtheadolescentpopulationofIsrael,Internetuseisnotdisplacingothersocialactivities.
4、However,adolescentswhoaremoresociallyisolatedaremorelikelytobefrequentInternetusers.Futureresearchshouldexplorewhetherforthisgroup,theInternetisbeingusedtoovercomeindividuals’barrierstotheformationofsocialrelationships.Sinceitsinception,theInternethasbecomeaglobalnetworkconnecting
5、individualsallovertheworld.Throughelectronicmail,newsgroups,Inter-netRelayChat(IRC),andICQ(“ISeekYou”)individualsarecommunicating,creatingnewsocialrelationships,andexchangingresourcessuchassocialsupport,information,andknowledge(WellmanandGulia,1998;Wellmanetal.,1996).Asthepercenta
6、geofInternetusersinthepopulationgrows,thereiscon-cernaboutthesocialimpactofitsuse.AnumberofpotentialnegativeoutcomesofInternetexposurehavebeensuggested,suchasaddiction(Brenner,1997;Griffiths,1999),socialisolation(Krautetal.,1998),lackofinvolvementinprosocialbehavior(FunkandBuchman
