2、eas,thusbeingcolorful,forcibleandthought-provoking.(ZhangWeiyou,2011,P181)It’sbelievedthatforeignlanguagelearnerslearnnotonlylanguage,butalsothecultureinwhichlanguageshapesanddevelops.Theprocessofreceivingalanguageisalsotheprocessofacquiringtheculturerelatedsincetheyaffecteachothersod
3、eeplyandwidely.EnglishandChinese,astwoofmosthighlydevelopedlanguagesintheworld,definitelycontainsaboundidioms.BritainandChinawhichoncehavecontributedalottoworldcivilizationandcausedatremendousimpacttothewholeworldareabsolutelyrepresentativesofWesterncultureandoriental’s.culturemeansth
4、ecustoms,institutions,objects,techniques,organizations,familypatternsandpoliticalsystemsthatcharacterizethelifeofahumancommunity,whichareexplicit(DaiLisheng,2009).AbetterunderstandingofEnglishculturewouldhelppeoplelearnalanguagebetter.Idiomsasanimportantpartoflanguage,isintimatelyboun
5、dupwithculture.2.DefinitionofIdiomsAccordingtoOxfordAdvancedLearner’sEnglish-ChineseDictionary,anidiomisagroupofwordswhosemeaningisdifferentfromthemeaningsofindividualwords.Idiomsareexpressionsthatarenotreadilyunderstandablefromtheirliteralmeaningsofindividualconstitutes,andinabroadse
6、nse,itincludescolloquialisms,catchphrases,slangexpressions,proverbs,etc..Correspondingly,Chinesehassimilartermssuchas“成语”(chengyu)whichinCurrentChineseDictionaryisdefinedasphrasesorshortsentencesthathavebeenaccustomedusedandconsistofacertainnumberofcharacters,briefandprofound,“歇后语”(at
