2、gcolorful,forcibleandthought-provoking.(ZhangWeiyou,2011,P181)It’sbelievedthatforeignlanguagelearnerslearnnotonlylanguage,butalsothecultureinwhichlanguageshapesanddevelops.Theprocessofreceivingalanguageisalsotheprocessofacquiringtheculturerelatedsincetheyaffecteachothersodeeplyandwidely.Englishan
3、dChinese,astwoofmosthighlydevelopedlanguagesintheworld,definitelycontainsaboundidioms.BritainandChinawhichoncehavecontributedalottoworldcivilizationandcausedatremendousimpacttothewholeworldareabsolutelyrepresentativesofWesterncultureandoriental’s.culturemeansthecustoms,institutions,objects,techni
4、ques,organizations,familypatternsandpoliticalsystemsthatcharacterizethelifeofahumancommunity,whichareexplicit(DaiLisheng,2009).AbetterunderstandingofEnglishculturewouldhelppeoplelearnalanguagebetter.Idiomsasanimportantpartoflanguage,isintimatelyboundupwithculture.2.DefinitionofIdiomsAccordingtoOx
5、fordAdvancedLearner’sEnglish-ChineseDictionary,anidiomisagroupofwordswhosemeaningisdifferentfromthemeaningsofindividualwords.Idiomsareexpressionsthatarenotreadilyunderstandablefromtheirliteralmeaningsofindividualconstitutes,andinabroadsense,itincludescolloquialisms,catchphrases,slangexpressions,p
6、roverbs,etc..Correspondingly,Chinesehassimilartermssuchas“成语”(chengyu)whichinCurrentChineseDictionaryisdefinedasphrasesorshortsentencesthathavebeenaccustomedusedandconsistofacertainnumberofcharacters,briefandprofound,“歇后语”(atwo-partallegoricalsaying)whichreferstoariddle-likesentencecomposingoftwo
