2、igi-nalsource,thinkofareferencethroughafamouslaterusage,wherenewelementsmaybeadded(asinthecaseofShaoPingbelow,wheretheRuanJipoemmediatedlaterunderstandingofthereference).Oftenawriteristhinkingofanepitomeoftheoriginaltext,ascanbefoundinencyclopedias,le
3、ishu.Instillothercasestherearemultiplesourceswhichhavecometogetherasa“story,”referencetowhichwassocommonthatittranscendedanyparticularsource.Somereferencesarestraightforwardandhaveprettymuchonlyonemeaningorassociation.Others,especiallyreferencestoindi
4、viduals,maybecontextuallystraightforward,butcaninviteconfusionandmisinter-pretationbythosewhoarenotfamiliarwiththehabitsofusage.Themostcommonproblemisknowingtoomuch.Ifasoldieriscalled“anAchilles,”itsimplymeansthatheisaskilledanddaringwarrior.Itdoesnot
5、meanthatheisgoingtodieyoung,anditdoesnotmeanthathewillregrethavingeverbecomeawarrior—astheshadeofAchillestellsOdys-seusintheunderworld.Ihaveoftenpurposefullykeptthesedecriptionsveryshortandtothepoint.DuFuuses“OldDeerskin”鹿皮翁threetimes.Thefullstoryinth
6、eShenxianzhuan神仙傳isanaccountofhowhebecameanimmortal,withmuchuniquedetail,inwhichheclimbstoaspringoftheimmortalsandlatersummonshisfamilypartwayupthepeak,savingthemfroma floodthatdevastatedtheregion.Itisonlyafterthis,however,thathebeginstoweardeerskinan
7、dmakesalivingbysellingmedicinalherbs.DuFuisclearlynotthinkingofthefullstory,butonlyofOldDeerskinasarecluse.Sometimescertainaspectsofastorymayhavegreatresonanceinonecontextandbetotallyignoredinanothercontext.BoYiandShuQiweretwobrotherswho,atthebeginnin
