3、ildingoutward,creatingtwocolonnadesthatweremeanttoconcealstablesandstorage.In1814,duringtheWarof1812,themansionwassetablazebytheBritishArmyintheBurningofWashington,destroyingtheinteriorandcharringmuchoftheexterior.Reconstructionbeganalmostimmediately,andPresidentJamesMonroemovedintotheparti
4、allyreconstructedhouseinOctober1817.ConstructioncontinuedwiththeadditionoftheSouthPorticoin1824andtheNorthin1829.Becauseofcrowdingwithintheexecutivemansionitself,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelthadallworkofficesrelocatedtothenewlyconstructedWestWingin1901.Eightyearslater,PresidentWilliamHowardTaf
5、texpandedtheWestWingandcreatedthefirstOvalOfficewhichwaseventuallymovedasthesectionwasexpanded.Thethird-flooratticwasconvertedtolivingquartersin1927byaugmentingtheexistinghiproofwithlongsheddormers.AnewlyconstructedEastWingwasusedasareceptionareaforsocialevents;Jefferson'scolonnadesconnecte
6、dthenewwings.EastWingalterationswerecompletedin1946,creatingadditionalofficespace.By1948,thehouse'sload-bearingexteriorwallsandinternalwoodbeamswerefoundtobeclosetofailure.UnderHarryS.Truman,theinteriorroomswerecompletelydismantledandanewinternalload-bearingsteelframeconstructedinsidethewal
