2、enueNWinWashington,D.C.,thehousewasdesignedbyIrish-bornJamesHoban,andbuiltbetween1792and1800ofwhite-paintedAquiasandstoneintheNeoclassicalstyle.IthasbeentheresidenceofeveryU.S.presidentsinceJohnAdams.WhenThomasJeffersonmovedintothehousein1801,he(witharchitectBenjaminHenryLatrobe)expandedt
3、hebuildingoutward,creatingtwocolonnadesthatweremeanttoconcealstablesandstorage.In1814,duringtheWarof1812,themansionwassetablazebytheBritishArmyintheBurningofWashington,destroyingtheinteriorandcharringmuchoftheexterior.Reconstructionbeganalmostimmediately,andPresidentJamesMonroemovedintoth
4、epartiallyreconstructedhouseinOctober1817.ConstructioncontinuedwiththeadditionoftheSouthPorticoin1824andtheNorthin1829.Becauseofcrowdingwithintheexecutivemansionitself,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelthadallworkofficesrelocatedtothenewlyconstructedWestWingin1901.Eightyearslater,PresidentWilliamH
5、owardTaftexpandedtheWestWingandcreatedthefirstOvalOfficewhichwaseventuallymovedasthesectionwasexpanded.Thethird-flooratticwasconvertedtolivingquartersin1927byaugmentingtheexistinghiproofwithlongsheddormers.AnewlyconstructedEastWingwasusedasareceptionareaforsocialevents;Jefferson'scolonnad
6、esconnectedthenewwings.EastWingalterationswerecompletedin1946,creatingadditionalofficespace.By1948,thehouse'sload-bearingexteriorwallsandinternalwoodbeamswerefoundtobeclosetofailure.UnderHarryS.Truman,theinteriorroomswerecompletelydismantledandanewinternalload-bearingsteelframeconstructed
