3、dthebuildingoutward,creatingtwocolonnadesthatweremeanttoconcealstablesandstorage.In1814,duringtheWarof1812,themansionwassetablazebytheBritishArmyintheBurningofWashington,destroyingtheinteriorandcharringmuchoftheexterior.Reconstructionbeganalmostimmediately,andPresidentJamesMonroemovedint
4、othepartiallyreconstructedhouseinOctober1817.ConstructioncontinuedwiththeadditionoftheSouthPorticoin1824andtheNorthin1829.Becauseofcrowdingwithintheexecutivemansionitself,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelthadallworkofficesrelocatedtothenewlyconstructedWestWingin1901.Eightyearslater,PresidentWill
5、iamHowardTaftexpandedtheWestWingandcreatedthefirstOvalOfficewhichwaseventuallymovedasthesectionwasexpanded.Thethird-flooratticwasconvertedtolivingquartersin1927byaugmentingtheexistinghiproofwithlongsheddormers.AnewlyconstructedEastWingwasusedasareceptionareaforsocialevents;Jefferson'scol
6、onnadesconnectedthenewwings.EastWingalterationswerecompletedin1946,creatingadditionalofficespace.By1948,thehouse'sload-bearingexteriorwallsandinternalwoodbeamswerefoundtobeclosetofailure.UnderHarryS.Truman,theinteriorroomswerecompletelydismantledandanewinternalload-bearingsteelframeconst
