2、ennsylvaniaAvenueNWinWashington,D.C.,thehousewasdesignedbyIrish-bornJamesHoban,andbuiltbetween1792and1800ofwhite-paintedAquiasandstoneintheNeoclassicalstyle.IthasbeentheresidenceofeveryU.S.presidentsinceJohnAdams.WhenThomasJeffersonmovedintothehousein1801,he(withar
3、chitectBenjaminHenryLatrobe)expandedthebuildingoutward,creatingtwocolonnadesthatweremeanttoconcealstablesandstorage.In1814,duringtheWarof1812,themansionwassetablazebytheBritishArmyintheBurningofWashington,destroyingtheinteriorandcharringmuchoftheexterior.Reconstruc
4、tionbeganalmostimmediately,andPresidentJamesMonroemovedintothepartiallyreconstructedhouseinOctober1817.ConstructioncontinuedwiththeadditionoftheSouthPorticoin1824andtheNorthin1829.Becauseofcrowdingwithintheexecutivemansionitself,PresidentTheodoreRoosevelthadallwork
5、officesrelocatedtothenewlyconstructedWestWingin1901.Eightyearslater,PresidentWilliamHowardTaftexpandedtheWestWingandcreatedthefirstOvalOfficewhichwaseventuallymovedasthesectionwasexpanded.Thethird-flooratticwasconvertedtolivingquartersin1927byaugmentingtheexistingh
6、iproofwithlongsheddormers.AnewlyconstructedEastWingwasusedasareceptionareaforsocialevents;Jefferson'scolonnadesconnectedthenewwings.EastWingalterationswerecompletedin1946,creatingadditionalofficespace.By1948,thehouse'sload-bearingexteriorwallsandinternalwoodbeamswe
7、refoundtobeclosetofailure.UnderHarryS.Truman,theinteriorroomswerecompletelydismantledandanewinternalload-bearingsteelframeconstructedinsidethewalls.Oncethisworkwascompleted,theinteriorroomswererebuiltToday,theWhiteHouseComplexincludestheExecutiveResidence,WestWing,
