2、century,areconsideredtobelandmarksinthedevelopmentofmathematics.Thepresentseriesoftextbooksisremarkableinthatthetextsincorporatethemostrecentscientificadvancesincoursesdesignedtoprovideundergraduatestudentswiththefoundationsofascientificdiscipline.Anoutstandinglevelofqual
3、ityisachievedineachofthesevenscientificfieldstaughtattheEcole:pureandappliedmathematics,mechanics,physics,chemistry,biology,andeconom-ics.Theuniformlevelofexcellenceistheresultoftheuniqueselectionofaca-demicstafftherewhichincludes,inadditiontothebestresearchersinitsownren
4、ownedlaboratories,alargenumberofworld-famousscientists,appointedaspart-timeprofessorsorassociateprofessors,whoworkinthemostadvancedresearchcentersFrancehasineachfield.Anotherdistinctivecharacteristicsofthesecoursesistheiroverallconsistency;eachcoursemakesappropriateuseofr
5、elevantconceptsintroducedintheothertextbooks.ThisisbecauseeachstudentattheEcolePolytechniquehastoacquirebasicknowledgeinthesevenscientificfieldstaughtthere,soasubstantiallinkbetweendepartmentsisnecessary.Thedistributionofthesecoursesusedtoberestrictedtothe900studentsatthe
