2、al,electrical,orotherfieldsofengineeringwhohavenothadapreviousbackgroundinnuclearenergy.Likewise,itisplannedtobeusefultopracticingengineersfromavarietyofdisciplineswhoseprofessionalresponsibilitiescallforfamiliaritywiththephy-sicsofnuclearreactors.Why
3、anewbookonreactorphysicswhenanumberoflegacytextsarestillinprint?Thebetterofthesearewellwritten,andsincethefundamentalsofthesubjectwerealreadyworkedoutatthetimeoftheirpublication,theyremainusefultoday.Myconviction,how-ever,isthatfortoday’sundergraduate
4、sandpracticingengineersanintroductiontoreactorphysicsisbetterpresentedthroughbothreor-ganizingandrefocusingthematerialofearliertexts,andindoingthatemphasizingthecharacteristicsofmodernpowerreactors.Earliertextbooksmostcommonlyhavebegunwiththerelevantn
5、uclearphysicsandneutroninteractions,andthenpresentedadetailedtreatmentofneutronslowingdownanddiffusioninhomo-geneousmixturesofmaterials.Onlyinthelatterpartsofsuchtextsdoestheanalysisoftheall-importanttime-dependentbehavioroffissionablesystemsappear,an
6、dthedependenceofcriticalityonlat-ticestructuresofreactorcorestypicallyislateinreceivingattention.Tosomeextentsuchaprogressionisnecessaryforthelogicaldevel-opmentofthesubject.However,bothinteachingundergraduatesandinofferingcontinuingeducationinstructi
7、onforpracticingengineers,Ihavefounditadvantageoustopresentaquantitativebutmoregeneraloverviewearlyinthetext,whiledeferringwherepossiblemoredetailedanalysis,andalsothemoreadvancedmathematicsthataccompaniesit,tolater.ThusIhavemovedthetreatmentofreactork
