2、ed24March2006;accepted10July2006Abstract:Thepromiseoffuelcellsystemsusingliquidfuels,suchasthedirectmethanolfuelcell(DMFC)anddirectborohydridefuelcell(DBFC),tocomplementorsubstituteforexistingbatteriesisbecomingrecognized,alongwiththeirpotentialasafuturetec
3、hnologyformobileandportablepowersupplies.Thekeyissueiswhichtypeoffuelcellismorecompetitiveforsuchpowersupplies:DMFCorDBFC?Toanswerthisquestion,thepresentstudyanalyzesanddiscussestherelativecompetitivenessofthesetwosystemsgiventhecurrentstatusofthetechnologi
4、esandassumingsomegenerallyacceptedconditions.ThefindingsconfirmthattheDBFCsystemissuperiortotheDMFCsystemintermsofcellsizeandfuel(orfuelsolution)consumption.Thus,theDBFCsystemisbettersuitedtoapplicationsthatrequiresmalloperationalspace.Ontheotherhand,thetot
5、aloperatingcostsofDBFCsystemsarehigherthanthoseofDMFCsystems.Accordingtothetotalcostformulaederivedintheanalysis,theDBFCsystembecomesrelativelyuneconomicathigherpoweroutputsandlongeroperationtimes,butmaybemorefavourableinspecificportableapplicationssuchasmi
