2、2006;accepted10July2006Abstract:Thepromiseoffuelcellsystemsusingliquidfuels,suchasthedirectmethanolfuelcell(DMFC)anddirectborohydridefuelcell(DBFC),tocomplementorsubstituteforexistingbatteriesisbecomingrecognized,alongwiththeirpotentialasafuturetechnologyformobilean
3、dportablepowersupplies.Thekeyissueiswhichtypeoffuelcellismorecompetitiveforsuchpowersupplies:DMFCorDBFC?Toanswerthisquestion,thepresentstudyanalyzesanddiscussestherelativecompetitivenessofthesetwosystemsgiventhecurrentstatusofthetechnologiesandassumingsomegenerallya
4、cceptedconditions.ThefindingsconfirmthattheDBFCsystemissuperiortotheDMFCsystemintermsofcellsizeandfuel(orfuelsolution)consumption.Thus,theDBFCsystemisbettersuitedtoapplicationsthatrequiresmalloperationalspace.Ontheotherhand,thetotaloperatingcostsofDBFCsystemsarehigh
5、erthanthoseofDMFCsystems.Accordingtothetotalcostformulaederivedintheanalysis,theDBFCsystembecomesrelativelyuneconomicathigherpoweroutputsandlongeroperationtimes,butmaybemorefavourableinspecificportableapplicationssuchasminiaturizedormicropowersystemswithshortoperati
